Hospital Associated Infections

Hospital-Associated Infections (HAI) are infections you get from hospitals while being treated for something else. These infections can be related to medical devices or to a surgery. These infections can cause you to spend more days in a hospital which can impact health care costs. It is important to note that many HAIs are preventable.

You can read about infections that occur in hospitals on this website. One of these infection types is bloodstream infections or central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). These infections have been a focus in Maryland for the past several  years. Maryland hospitals have reduced the number of these bloodstream infections through various prevention methods. Since reporting began, these bloodstream infections in intensive care units have been reduced by more than 40 percent.
